THE NORTHERN LAGOON: MURANO, BURANO, TORCELLO
Understanding the lagoon, the environment where Venice is situated, is important in order to understand the essence of this unique city. The shallow waters only Venetians knew how to navigate offered the natural protection from enemies: Venice never needed defensive walls! Salt and fish were the prime and first resources, as well as the goods they could trade. Gradually Venice acquired its present configuration, while the small islands scattered around the whole lagoon inlet became home to monastic orders.
Torcello still preserves the oldest church in the lagoon; the brightly coloured houses of Burano, a charming and quaint fisherman island, make it all look like a painter's palette. And Murano has been the centre of the production of artistic glass since 1291.
