St. Mark’s Basilica
St. Mark's Basilica is the oldest monument in town. Founded in 827 and rebuilt in 1063: a Byzantine church where the Venetians got completely carried away and draped with golden mosaics the whole interior. A church of gold. However, St. Mark's church is not just an artistic or architectural endeavour.
This church was conceived to establish the Mith of Venice, its political and religious prestige: here in fact rests the body of St. Mark the Evangelist, stolen in Egypt. That changed the course of history for Venice. This visit will be revealing and will give you a good understanding of what Venetians could be capable of! We shall access the church through a priority entrance and visit also those parts of the church which are not normally open to the daily public.
