THE GHETTO: THE JEWISH QUARTER OF VENICE
In 1516 the Venice Senate officially approved the establishment of a residential quarter for the Jewish Nation. This unique and revolutionary decision proceeded from sheer economic and political convenience. A fascinating story of discrimination and hospitality. The Ghetto attracted Jews from all over Europe.
There came the synagogues and the pawn-broker shops.
Severe restrictions could not deter the place from becoming a real magnet, a vibrant, cultured and cosmopolitan place.
An intriguing course of events still shrouded with mistery and needing more in-depth studies and investigation.
We shall visit the main old synagogues, identify the old pawn-broker shops, indulge in the shops selling judaika artifacts and traditional Venetian Jewish pastries.
