FRATERNITIES
Better known as "scuole" in Venice, lay fraternities or guilds were established all over Europe in the 13° C with the scope of mutual aid. Their houses were decorated by illustrious artists. These institutions represent an intriguing and fascinating page of Venetian history and will give you an insight of how society was structured in the past: communal life, the cult of saints and relics, processions, the black plague, foreign communities. Just a few were spared Napoleonic supressions and preserve masterpieces by Tintoretto, Carpaccio, Bellini.
